EV charger grant for renters and flat owners

As checked on 6 October 2026, the OZEV grant for renters and flat owners can cover 75% of eligible chargepoint purchase and installation costs, up to £500 for one socket. You must live at the property, have qualifying private off-street parking and meet the vehicle and other scheme rules. OZEV decides whether an application qualifies.

In plain English

How much is the current grant?

The current maximum is 75% of eligible costs, capped at £500 for one socket. A £1,000 eligible installation would reach the £500 cap; the grant is not an automatic £500 cash payment. It is paid to the installer after an approved claim, and the installer deducts the approved amount from your invoice.

GOV.UK lists funding for this scheme until 31 March 2027. The government can change or end a scheme, so check the live rules before arranging work. Old adverts may show the previous £350 cap.

Who can apply for the renters and flat owners grant?

The scheme covers people who live in a flat they own, including shared ownership, or rent a residential property where the landlord does not live. Your home must be in the UK, and you must own or use a vehicle on OZEV's approved-vehicle list. The grant can only be claimed once for the residence under this scheme or its predecessors.

You generally cannot apply if you own and live in a house, are a lodger in the homeowner's property, are moving, have already claimed for the residence, or the chargepoint or infrastructure was legally required as part of a new build. These rules describe this grant only; landlords and households with on-street parking have different schemes.

Read the current official eligibility rules. This guide cannot decide your eligibility; OZEV assesses each application.

What parking rights and permissions do you need?

Your parking must be private, off-street, clearly defined and accessible to you at all times. It does not have to be part of the property, but you must own it or have the legal right to use it for charging. A shared bay or communal car park is not automatically excluded; you need the necessary written rights and permissions.

If you rent or use shared property, obtain written permission from your landlord, freeholder or property manager. The application may also need evidence such as a recent utility bill and tenancy agreement. The installer will assess whether the parking and cable route allow a suitable installation.

If you only have public-road parking, see the on-street charging guide. The cross-pavement grant is separate, and the local highways authority must approve its route.

How the application normally works

  1. Check your car is on the current OZEV-approved vehicle list and the proposed chargepoint model is on the eligible list.
  2. Ask an OZEV-authorised installer for a dated quote.
  3. Gather vehicle, address, tenancy and property/parking permission evidence.
  4. Submit the online application through the official grant service.
  5. Wait for OZEV to confirm your eligibility before installation starts.
  6. After installation, the installer submits the claim. If approved, OZEV pays the installer and the grant is deducted from the eligible invoice.

The grant cannot be backdated. GOV.UK initially estimates up to 10 working days to assess applications on its new platform, but this is not a guaranteed processing time. Confirm the current timescale and instructions on the official application page.

Your next step

Before booking an installation

  • Confirm the grant fits your tenure, home, parking rights and eligible vehicle.
  • Get written landlord, freeholder or managing-agent permission where needed.
  • Check the exact charger model and installer against OZEV's current lists.
  • Read the dated quote, what work it includes and how the grant is deducted.
  • Do not allow installation to begin until you have the eligibility notification.

For the rest of the job and what may change a quote, see the installation overview and installation costs. Eligibility and scheme terms can change; use the official GOV.UK links above for a current decision.
